UP Municipal Corporations to Double Advertising Revenue in Five Years

Urban Development Department charts ambitious roadmap under CM Yogi’s leadership

Lucknow, April 20 – The municipal corporations of Uttar Pradesh are poised for a major boost in advertising revenue, with projections indicating a 100% surge over the next five years. This ambitious growth is part of a comprehensive strategy formulated by the Department of Urban Development, guided by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

According to the proposed Advertising Manual 2025, advertising income is expected to grow by 5% annually through innovative policy reforms, while additional urban development initiatives—such as expanding municipal limits, constructing new routes, and embracing digital advertising—are projected to contribute a further 10% growth each year.

In line with the Chief Minister’s vision for financially self-reliant urban bodies, the new roadmap emphasizes transparency, technology integration, and sustainable practices in municipal advertising. The policy aims to curb irregularities while maximizing revenue through both traditional and digital channels.

Smart City projects are playing a key role in this transformation, with the installation of LED screens and digital boards across major urban centers. These modern platforms are expected to attract higher-value advertising, particularly from private sector players seeking high-visibility spots.

In FY 2024–25, municipal corporations collectively earned ₹78.9 crore from advertising. This is projected to increase to ₹90.74 crore in 2025–26 and ₹104.35 crore in 2026–27, ultimately reaching ₹158.7 crore by 2029–30.

The revenue growth will be driven by a diversified advertising ecosystem that includes digital displays, mobile vans, static hoardings, and ad spaces on public transport like buses and auto-rickshaws. Further revenue potential lies in the expansion of municipal boundaries, which is expected to create new commercial zones and high-footfall areas ideal for advertising.

During a recent review meeting, the Urban Development Department announced that the upcoming advertising manual will feature several forward-thinking measures. These include incentives for mobile advertising units, permissions for digital hoardings on private buildings, and environmental guidelines to ensure that ad placements enhance rather than detract from the urban landscape.

This evolving policy framework is not just about revenue—it’s a step towards cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable urban growth in Uttar Pradesh.
