Dr. Arpita Katheria, Assistant Professor of Cardiology, set the tone with an insightful session titled “Understanding Hypertension: The Silent Killer.” She emphasized how high blood pressure often goes unnoticed until it causes serious damage, highlighting the need for greater awareness and routine health monitoring.

  • Over 1.28 billion adults globally suffer from hypertension, with nearly half unaware of their condition.
  • In India, 1 in 3 adults has high blood pressure; over 50% remain undiagnosed, and just 20% have their BP under control.
  • Hypertension is a major contributor to heart disease, responsible for over 27% of deaths in India.
  • Common culprits include poor diet, chronic stress, and sedentary lifestyles, especially among young adults.

Dr. Prerna Kapoor warned that hypertension, though silent, could lead to heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure if ignored. “Early detection through regular screening is essential,” she stressed, encouraging people to monitor their blood pressure regularly and adopt healthy habits.
