KGMU and IHAT sign MoU to establish advanced data science centre in Lucknow

Lucknow: In a significant step toward revolutionizing healthcare delivery though data-driven innovation, King George Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, has partnered with India Health Action Trust (IHAT) to establish a state of the art Data Science Centre on its campus.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formally signed on Friday 6 june 2025, at KGMU between Vice chancellor of KGMU Prof Soniya Nityanand, and Mr John Anthony, senior project Director, IHAT-UPTSU. The signing ceremony was also attended by senior public health experts from the University of Manitoba, Canada- Dr. James Blanchard and Dr. Marissa /Becker- who are providing key technical input to the initiative.
This collaborative initiative aims to strengthen KGMU’s capabilities in health data analytics and promote evidence based decision making across critical healthcare areas in Uttar Pradesh. The data science centre will initially focus on two high priority plot projects:
- Pregnancy Referral Analysis– to streamline and improve maternal health referrals and outcomes.
- Measles and SSPE Surveillance– to enhance monitoring of vaccine preventable diseases and prevent complications.
Looking ahead, the Centre is expected to expand its work to include other pressing health domain such as urban health, cancer surveillance, and geriatric care, thereby supporting a more responsive and effective public health system.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Soniya Nityanand said, “This collaboration underscores KGMU’s commitment to harnessing innovation for public for public good. The new Data Science Centre will transform how we use health data to address real-world challenges and proactively respond to public health needs.”
IHAT representatives echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the role of data science in shaping the future of healthcare policies and interventions in India.
With this partnership, KGMU is poised to become a regional hub for health data research and policy innovation, aligning with global standards and fostering stronger public health.
