Filmmaker Anurag Basu Opens Up About Cinema and Mental Health at Thursday Musings 237

Lucknow, April 17, 2025 — Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Basu brought a heartfelt and deeply personal touch to the 237th edition of Thursday Musings, held on April 17. The session centered on emotional vulnerability, the portrayal of mental health in cinema, and the healing power of storytelling.

 

The renowned director, known for films that blend emotion with narrative depth, shared intimate experiences from his filmmaking journey and his battle with leukemia. He spoke about how these life events have shaped his cinematic vision and his commitment to creating content that raises awareness around mental health.

Participants engaged in meaningful conversations about cinema’s unique ability to mirror the human mind. Discussions spanned the therapeutic potential of films, the growing sensitivity in Bollywood’s mental health portrayals, and how childhood experiences and genetics play a role in emotional well-being.

Looking ahead, Basu revealed his upcoming plans to speak at the Indian Psychiatric Society’s conference in Delhi and hinted at potential film projects addressing suicide prevention and substance abuse.

Thursday Musings, launched on July 23, 2020, has become a hallmark initiative for mental health professionals. With 84,120 participants across 237 sessions, it holds a world record for its impact and reach. The free webinar series is spearheaded by Dr. Tophan Pati, Dr. M Aleem Siddiqui, Dr. Amrit Pattojoshi, Dr. Shobit Garg, and Dr. Vishal Chabbra, and is supported by the Indian Psychiatric Society (OSB).

The 237th edition stands out not just for its star power but for its sincere effort to bridge cinema and mental health—two powerful forces that, together, can spark change.
